Why regular checkups matter
Most dental problems start small and without pain. A tiny cavity, early gum inflammation or a cracked filling can go unnoticed for months. A regular checkup lets your dentist find these early, when treatment is simpler, quicker and less costly.
Checkups are also a chance to have plaque and tartar removed. Tartar is hardened plaque that brushing at home cannot shift, and it is one of the main causes of gum disease.
Before the exam
Your visit usually begins with a short conversation. Your dentist or hygienist will ask about:
- Any pain, sensitivity or changes you have noticed since your last visit
- Your general health and any medicines you take
- Habits that affect your teeth, such as smoking or grinding at night
- Any worries you have about treatment
